How to Plant a Balled and Burlapped Shade Tree
Dig hole approximately 10 to 12" wider than the root ball and no deeper than the top of the burlap (1" to 2" less for a heavier clay soil, allowing the tree to be raised slightly).
Set tree into hole. View it from several directions to assure a straight set.
Add the best topsoil available. Pack the soil frequently while planting to create strudy base. If soil is less desirable, add compost or a topsoil mix.
Water the root ball after planting. Leave garden hose turned to a low volume for about 10 minutes (approximately 10-15 gal.). Water about every 10 days for the first 30 days. Through mid summer months, the tree should be watered once a month, twice for dry conditions and less for a wet season.
